Helping children deal with big emotions during divorce

On Behalf of | Sep 15, 2025 | child custody |

Divorce is hard on parents, but it can be even harder on children. In some cases, particularly with young children, they may experience emotions that they’ve never felt before. It’s also possible that they may experience conflicting emotions, which can be difficult to deal with.

It’s up to parents to ensure that they’re helping their children deal with these emotions and learn how to handle them during the divorce. It’s not really possible to stop the storm, but you can help them to navigate it safely. These tips may be beneficial for some parents.

Give children a space to let out their emotions

Your children will need a safe space where they can share things with you without being judged. This means taking the time to listen to them and validating their feelings. You need to discuss their emotions in an appropriate manner. It’s important to take the time to listen, even if it’s difficult to hear what they’re saying.

Reassure them that they aren’t to blame

For some children, the most difficult thing to deal with is thinking that they’re to blame for the divorce. You have to make it clear that this was a decision made by the adults. This simple reassurance can relieve a big emotional burden from the children.

Never use them as messengers

Children love both of their parents, so trying to use them as messengers between you can be difficult. In some cases, it may make the children feel like they have to choose sides. Communicating directly with the child’s other parent and keeping your child out of the middle can help your child to feel more secure.

You and your ex should commit to getting the parenting plan set as soon as possible. This can help to give your children the consistency that they need to thrive despite the divorce. Coming up with the terms of this can be challenging, particularly if you and your ex are having contentious discussions. It may be beneficial to work with someone who can assist with this.
